TUN MUSTAPHA PARK FIP

REEF FISHES FIP IN MARUDU BAY, TUN MUSTAPHA PARK, SABAH

The reef fish Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) is located at Marudu Bay, Tun Mustapha Park (TMP) in Sabah, covering 100,000 hectares of area. There are 13 villages involved in this project which are located in: Kudat, Kota Marudu and Pitas.

This project focuses on reef fishes mainly on groupers, trevally and snappers which are caught using traditional fishing gears, such as hook and line, and gillnet. Approximately 500 fishermen will be positively impacted from this project.

The FIP project improves fishery sustainability via three key principles: sustainable fish stocks, minimum environmental impacts, and effective fishery management. The FIP progress is monitored and tracked using the Benchmarking Monitoring Tool (BMT). The BMT shows the progress and status of each FIP principle, all FIP components (under the 3 FIP principles) and the overall scoring trendline.

Overall, 17 components from the 3 principles have passed with conditions in blue (needing some improvement) while 11 components in red have not yet met the FIP requirements. Hence, more activities and strategies improvement are needed for better scoring.

As of 2021, reef fish Tun Mustapha Park FIP scored 0.30 out of 1 for BMT scoring. It is expected that in 2022, this FIP will achieve 0.57 scoring, showing 57% improvement of the fishery.
