Our Work

WWF-MALAYSIA MARINE FOOTPRINT TEAM

Under the Marine Programme of WWF-Malaysia, we focus on sustainable production and consumption to protect Malaysia’s marine resources through collaboration with governments, businesses, consumers and partners across the country.

Our work is aligned with:

  • United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 14 (Life Below Water)
  • WWF’s Global Goals for Ocean, Wildlife, Food, Climate and Energy
  • WWF’s New Deal for Nature and People

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

For Aquaculture, we promote and implement responsible aquaculture tools to small-scale aquaculture operators and medium-large aquaculture operators in Malaysia, working towards a more responsible and resilient aquaculture industry.

For Fisheries, we provide support to fishing communities in adopting and implementing sustainable fisheries initiatives that include implementing community-based fisheries projects, establishing baselines, and monitoring efforts to address overfishing of commercially valuable fishes in Malaysia.

SHARK AND RAY CONSERVATION

We adopt two strategic approaches in shark and ray conservation:

  • Spatial protection through improving underwater monitoring and designing effective management plans for sharks and rays in Marine Protected Areas.
  • Bycatch Mitigation Initiatives: Exploring mitigation techniques to reduce bycatch mortality and conducting relevant research to identify science-based management in fisheries.

How you can support

SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION

We engage urban consumers and communities to adopt responsible food consumption practices, focusing on balanced and sustainable diets (which includes eating seafood responsibly) and reducing household food waste.

We work with and alongside hospitality and food retail businesses to transform business practices towards sustainability, with a particular focus on sourcing seafood responsibly as well as managing food waste for reduction and diversion from landfill. We also provide and promote relevant tools and resources to the industry.

POLICY ADVOCACY

We identify and recommend policy and legislation measures to mainstream sustainable practices in aquaculture, fisheries and bycatch, food consumption and food waste management, as well as coastal and marine ecosystem governance.
